Halkbank executive sentenced to 32 months | Money Talks
A US court in New York has sentenced Halkbank executive Mehmet Hakan Atilla to 32 months in prison for evading US sanctions on Iran. The United States prosecutors had previously asked for him to be jailed for more than 15 years. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said Atilla is "definitely innocent" and declaring him a criminal was almost equivalent to declaring the Turkish state 'criminal'. Let's go to Miami and speak to our editor at large, Craig Copetas.

Former Halkbank executive Mehmet Hakan Atilla was found guilty on five counts, including bank fraud and conspiracy. He was acquitted of one charge of money laundering. Atilla was accused of helping Iran trade its oil and gas for gold to dodge US sanctions. He was accused of moving the money through US banks without their knowledge. A senior Turkish official dismissed the verdict as void and said it violated international law. Atilla's defence attorney says they plan to appeal the decision.

Reza Zarrab: The Upside-Down Deal in the Iran Sanction-Busting Scandal!
Turkish gold trader Reza Zarrab, who is also involved in Special Counsel Mueller's investigation, has been released from federal prison and given immunity, and will be the star witness at a trial over a scheme to evade U.S. sanctions against Iran. Federal prosecutors in New York will have Zarrab on the stand on Wednesday to testify against his former co-defendant, Turkish bank executive Mehmet Atilla. In this episode of Probable Cause Sibel Edmonds presents two main factors driving the direction of the Zarrab case- both of which are absent from the agenda-driven mainstream and pseudo-alternative media outlets. Edmonds discusses Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s role and targets in the case, and delves into the backward deal- aka an upside-down deal, the US prosecutors have given Zarrab-the Kingpin, in the Gold-for-Gas case in return for his testimony against the low-level accomplices. Turkey urges US to drop case against gold trader Reza Zarrab
A Turkish gold trader charged with conspiring to evade US sanctions against Iran will not go on trial in New York this week. Reza Zarrab dropped out of sight in the two months leading up to his scheduled trial. However, there is widespread speculation that Zarrab has flipped and is now cooperating with the prosecution. He was abruptly released from prison in early November and his whereabouts are publically unknown. The US attorney says he remains in federal custody. And that has led to speculation that he entered the witness protection programme. It's prompted Turkey's prime minister to suggest Zarrab has reached a plea deal with US authorities. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey maintains this is a politically motivated prosecution intended to discredit and ultimately overthrow his government on behalf of Fethullah Gulen, an Islamic leader who lives in Pennsylvania.
