Turkey still seeks to gain "full membership" of the EU, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said. Joining the bloc remains a "strategic goal", he said, ahead of a meeting with EU leaders in Bulgaria. Ankara wants deeper trade ties with the soon-to-be 27-member union, as well as visa-free travel to Europe.

German minister: Turkish occupation of Afrin "not acceptable". Germany would not accept a permanent occupation of the Afrin area by Turkey, the country's foreign minister Heiko Mass said on Friday. Speaking alongside his Italian counterpart Angelino Alfano while on a visit to Rome, Maas said the occupation of the Syrian territory near the Turkish border would "create issues related to international law." He said German Chancellor Angel Merkel's mind was very clear on the matter.

The European Union must be very clear with Turkey in terms of respecting international laws, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras stated on Thursday before attending the two-day EU Council meeting. “I think that we have to be very skeptical about the developments in the region. But I think that we have to be very straight to the Turkish side about their obligations, especially their obligation to respect international law, but at the same time to keep open the doors of dialogue,” Tsipras replied to a question.
