Turkey rejected a German plan for an internationally enforced 30 km wide security zone along Syria’s border with Turkey as “unrealistic”, rebuffing German criticism of Ankara’s recent operation in Syria.

Germany's Defense Minister has put forth a plan for the future of northern Syria. Annegret Kramp-Karenbauer's plan calls for an internationally patrolled security zone in Syria along the border with Turkey. That's similar to what Turkey says it wants to achieve with its own incursion. The difference is that the zone proposed by the Germany defence minister would be under international and not Turkish control. Kramp-Karrenbauer is seen as a possible successor to Chancellor Merkel. She says she has discussed her proposal with Merkel and put it to Germany's western allies.

The Syrian president's office has released video and photos of what it says is a visit by the President Bashar Assad to the troops in Idlib province on Tuesday, criticizing Turkey and calling for resistance to its recent invasion the country's northeast. Idlib is the last province of Syria where rebels are still holding out.

As the U.S. watched from the sidelines, Russia's Vladimir Putin emerged as the key power player in Syria, reaching an agreement for a new ceasefire with the president of Turkey. That will give Russia time to oversee the removal of Kurdish militias.

Turkey's president sat down with the Russian president to discuss Syria's future. A ceasefire in northern Syria is due to expire Tuesday. If the fighting resumes, Kurdish forces in the region who helped the U.S. fight ISIS will be at risk, along with Kurdish civilians.
